A rare photograph of me at the Ride for Sight Fundraiser

About

Hi, my name is John Doyle. Photography has been a passion of mine since my first Brownie 127 camera back in the 1960’s. (Heck, am I really that old?) My collection has expanded significantly as I’ve kept pace with the evolution of camera technology.

For me, the very essence of photography is black and white. The absence of color leaves the shades of grey and light to tell the story, which they can do so beautifully, so eloquently. It’s an emotional experience for me.

I’m inspired by some of the great photographers, including, but not limited to Dorothea Lange, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Henri Cartier Bresson, and who can forget the iconic images of Ansel Adams. I have spent more hours than I can count studying their various styles and techniques, as I strived to develop my own style.

I do not limit myself to black and white however. Over the years my day job has taken me to a few different countries around the world where some of the bold colours could result in sensory overload. The incredible lotus flowers in China really grabbed my attention. I spent many weeks every summer capturing their beauty in unique ways. Some of those images have garnered quite a bit of attention, and have been printed in large format. They now grace the walls of various homes both in Asia and at home here in Canada. You will find some of my favourite travel and lotus images as you explore my gallery.

I was recently asked to take some photos at a small horse show near my home in Southern Alberta. What an experience that was. I was inspired by the commitment and determination of the riders, and of course the sheer, but controlled, power of these impressive animals. I have found a new avenue for my art.

I really do love what I do, and I’m excited to share some images in the hope that at least one of them will elicit an emotional response of some sort in you. If that happens, then my goal, as a photographer, is achieved.
